An mTAN, also known as mobile TAN or smsTAN, is a code send by SMS which is valid for a defined period of time and one defined transaction. This one-time password is one of the factors of a 2-factor-authentication that is mainly used for online transfers, logins or approval processes.
PSD2: New Directive For Payment Transactions

Coming into effect in January 2018, PSD2 will cause several changes. For example, end users will then be entitled to use an independent 2-factor-authentication for transactions >30 EUR. Companies are not obliged to offer this, but: In case they reject 2-factor-authentication, they are liable for alle damages caused by fraud.

Let’s have a look on the example of an online bank transfer: As soon as all relevant data are added within the transfer form, a user usually confirms these information but still has to authorize the transaction with a TAN. By confirming the data, an mTAN is generated and is directly send to the users mobile phone registered within his bank account in a matter of seconds. Adding this mTAN, he finally authorizes the payment.
